Cross-flow Cake Filtration Mechanisms and Kinetics

چکیده

An experimental investigation of the cake filtration behaviour of 125-180 pm polyethylene particles, suspended in a neutrally buoyant Newtonian fluid, has been carried out. Static cake filtration measurements of both filtrate volume out-flow and cake thickness kinetics show the familiar t”” time dependence. In addition, the hydraulic resistance of the cake was found to be pressure independent, indicating that incompressible cakes were formed under the pressure conditions examined. When cross-flow is applied, the filter cake tends towards a reduced limiting thickness but surprisingly the corresponding filtration rate or flux is observed to decrease. Direct in situ observations of the cake deposition process clearly reveal the mechanisms controlling particle capture at the surface and this effect, together with a particle deposition model where the packing within the filter cake is cross-flow dependent, is used to successfully describe the observed experimental behaviour.

A Surface-renewal Model of Cross-flow Microfiltration

A mathematical model using classical cake-filtration theory and the surface-renewal concept is formulated for describing cross-flow microfiltration under dynamic and steady-state conditions. The model can predict the permeate flux and cake buildup in the filter. The three basic parameters of the model are the membrane resistance, specific cake resistance and rate of surface renewal. The model i...

An Investigation of Asphaltene Deposition Mechanisms During Natural Depletion Process by a Two Phase Modeling Using Genetic Algorithm Technique

In this work, the natural depletion process in sandstone and carbonate cores was modeled to investigate the asphaltene deposition mechanisms. A new permeability reduction correlation was proposed based on the Minssieux model that considers a combination of surface deposition, pore throat plugging, and filtration cake mechanisms. The results showed that the filtration cake is a dominant asphalte...

Fouling mechanisms during protein microfiltration: The effects of protein structure and filtration pressure on polypropylene microporous membrane performance

A polypropylene microporous membrane (PPMM) was fabricated by thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) method. The effects of protein size and structure as well as filtration pressure on the membrane performance and fouling mechanisms were investigated using two different proteins, bovine serum albumin (BSA) and collagen, in dead-end filtration setup. Obtained results showed that, for each pro...

Modeling of Unsteady-State Cake Formation on a Fracture in Produced Water Re-Injection Process (PWRI)

In petroleum production, Produced Water Re-Injection (PWRI) has earned much interest among disposal methods of the produced water. However, presence of the contaminants in the produced waters usually results in formation damage in well bores and their surrounding fracture systems. In the present study, modeling of external cake formation on a fracture in unsteady-state conditions i...

Combined Three Mechanisms Models for Membrane Fouling during Microfiltration

Five new mathematical triple fouling models were developed to explore the flux decline behavior during the microfiltration. The first model was developed by the assumption of the successive effects of standard mechanism, intermediate pore blockage and cake formation by using the standard blocking flux expression in the model calculations. The second and third models also obtained by the success...
